Notes
(Richard Willis)
Sedimentary rock, a conglomerate principally of quartz and of cemented silica, calcium carbonate, iron oxide, and (marl) clay; usually consisting of compressed sand plus, if near a sea, as usually it is (or what was once a sea), salts and phosphors in their original forms such as the granular remains of the shells, bones, and so forth of sea-living animals. Common to islands which originated as sea beds raised above sea level are sandstone-looking rock earths but which are instead calcium carbon
ate formations even though often with a good deal of sand built-in. see calcareous rocks
Sandstone composition is highly refractory and can be used in kiln construction if well insulated from humidity (suseptible to trapped vapor cracking) and direct flame (given to dusting). Milled, it affords a quartz sand for clays and glazes.
