POTASSIUM
Miscellaneous
- Family: None
- Region: None
- Mined At: Unspecified
- Raw Mineral: Yes
- Generic: No
Notes
(Richard Willis)
Element, with the symbol K and atomic weight of 39.10
Water soluble. K2CO3 fuses at 890ºC. KNO3 fuses at 340ºC. Popular alkali flux in temperatures from 500 to 1400ªC, though preferred for clays more than for glazes; and, owing to its high solubility in water, it is used mostly via clays and minerals of, and containing its, insoluble forms, such as potassium feldspar (orthoclase)
water solubility & fusion ºC
carbonate soluble 891
dichromate soluble 398
nitrate soluble 333
feldspar insoluble 1200
commonly used forms
oxide K2O
chlorurium KCl
hydroxide KOH
sulfate K2SO4
carbonate (potash) K2CO3
nitrate KNO3
dichromate K2Cr2O7
feldspar K2O, Al2O3, 6SiO2
