Also called inclusions, filler, and temper, a nomenclature used more by archaeologists than by ceramists in reference to grog but also including, more generally, any material (straw, sticks, bones, stones, etc.) used in particular by potters since earliest of times to open clay in preparation, especially, for the rapid drying and heat rises of sun-baking and open, bonfire, firings.
