Mineral, of the complex form SiO2 nH2O
A soft semi-precious stone in that it fluxes easily for glazing, using it in place of quartz (will fuse at lower temperatures than quartz). Comes in many varieties of textures, tones and colors: noble opal, fire opal, white opal, common opal, woody (ligneous) opal [xiopal], prasopal, hydrophane, hyalite, spongy opal, jasopal, cacholong, and so forth.
