NEPHELINE

Miscellaneous

Notes

(Richard Willis)

Mineral, of the ideal form K2O, 3Na2O, 4Al2O3, 8SiO2 with a typical empirical analysis of K2O 8.06%, Na2O 15.91%, Al2O3 34.90%, SiO2 41.13%
Hardness: 5.5-6 Density: 2.6-2.65 Soluble in acids
Popular high-alkaline feldspathic for low to medium temperature glazes, common to use of magmatics and pegmatites. Similar are apatite, cancrinite, and syenite. Mostly used in combination with syenite vis a vis the rock, nepheline-syenite, even though it is equally available via the rock, nephelinite.
