Clay-making mineral of the group allophane-imogolite, named for the glassy volcanic ash (imogo) where it occurs. Of the generic form SiO2, Al2O3, 2.5H2O, it is a hydrous aluminosilicate with varying inclusions and proportions of the alkali metals. see clay minerals
