Notes
(Richard Willis)
Graphite can be many many things, soft or strong, heat conductive or heat resistant, lubricious or abrasive. It is a one of the most useful of materials and is employed in nearly every major industry.
Graphite products take many forms from fine powders to chunks, flakes and granules. It can be glossy or matte, black or grey, smooth or rough. It is mined as a natural product or created as a synthetic material.
-Graphite is used as a carbon source in metal manufacture and pencils and in the ceramic industry large amounts of graphite are used in the production of silicon carbide.
-Its electrical conductivity make it valuable in electrodes, conductive plastics and coatings
-Its lubricity make it useful in release agents, greases, film coatings, seals, powder metal parts
-Its friction modifier properties make it useful in brake linings, clutch facings, coatings
-Its thermal conductivity make it useful in refractory brick and plastics, crucibles, core and mold coatings
-Its chemical inertness make it useful in rubber packings and seals, ceramic seals, catalysts
Data
- Density: 2.25
- Hardness (Moh): 1-1.5
