Notes
(Richard Willis)
Plutonic rock, essentially of plagioclase feldspars and quartz, with biotite, muscovite, hornblende, pyroxene, tourmaline, etc. The mother-rock of feldspars and quartz. Among feldspathics, granites are resembled most by the pegmatites. Formed by fusion of sedimentaries as a final phase of metamorphosis of young magma. Numerous varieties. It has been said that if obsidians constituents were unvitrified they would be a granite clay, and, conversely, if granite were vitrified it would be obsidian: to thi
s thinking, granite could also be called obsidian clay.
