As with calcareous rocks, calcareous earths are principally of calcium carbonate accompanied by aluminum silicates in feldspathic forms, but with far more “impurities” than are rocks, simply owing to the fact that earths are likely mixtures of minerals and oxides of more varied and distinct origins than are rocks. Calcareous earths are good for potters, but bad for farmers, since, often as not, there will be a good portion of lime present — ergo, the common nomenclature of “
