Mineral, of the ideal form ZnS with a typical empirical analysis of ZnO 67.06%, S 32.94%
Hardness: 3.9-4.1 Density: 3.5-4 Soluble in HCl and HNO3
The major zinc mineral. Its amphibole, hornblende (a silicate) is amongst the most common ingredients making up rocks, and in particular the igneous rocks. Should be calcinated prior to use in glaze formulas. Varieties are marmatite and cleofane.
