BISMUTH

Chemistry

Bi2O3100.000

Miscellaneous

Notes

(Richard Willis)

Element, with the symbol Bi and atomic weight of 208.98
Bismuth has a lower fusion temperature than Pb, permitting over-glaze applications at very low temperatures, and can be used instead of lead in recipes with interesting lustrous results, particularly at temperatures between 400 and 800ºC under heavy reduction. For exaggerated metallic lusters it is used alone, as the metal powder, as a simple wash-coating thickly applied over alkali-, boron-, and/or lead-fluxed transparent glaze. Its preferred usage is with the nitrate form, Bi(NO3 UB>)3, 5H2O. The oxide BiO is commonly used as well.
