Notes
(Richard Willis)
The salts of the alginic acid contained in kelp, particularly brown kelp. Algae, and seaweed in general, have long been a source of the alkalies potassium, calcium and especially sodium, and glaze recipes abound from antiquity to present times indicating their use in proportioning alkaline fluxing agents. Alginates are added to clay slurries to enhance plasticity and strength and to better maintain suspension of insoluble particles. Though not to be confused with flocculants per se, alginates ca
n be used as some of the ingredients to a flocculants recipe. Alginates are used as soda salts and ammonias are used to coagulate rather than to flocculate.
